Tuesday Tweets

Image
Last week on Tuesday we told you about the bird feeders mom put up in the yard. At the end we sort of debated on Tuesday Tweets or Feather Friend Friday. We decided on Tuesday Tweets since the original post was Tuesday and well...why not just continue on from there? So here are some of the various birds that have come to entertain us eat at the feeders this past week. We've had a few handsome blue jays. A Carolina Wren. Some Downy Woodpeckers. A couple of finches. A lovely lady Cardinal, with her friend the Chickadee. And, of course, her handsome male counterpart and his friend the Tufted Titmouse. A Nuthatch.  A Red-Bellied Woodpecker. Some Mourning doves and juncos. Mom laughs at this photo. Does that little Junco look like a bird-y security guard to you? 'You wanna get to the doves, you gotta go through me first! Next week for Tuesday Tweets, mom is debating on having me and Honey pick out one of the species of b...

New things in the yard

Image
Hey Honey, come here and look at this. Or don't, I guess...that's ok too... Mom put something new out in the yard!  Well...a few somethings, really.  Bird feeders...and they are really drawing a crowd! One cedar seed feeder, one hanging finch feeder, and three types of suet feeders. Yeesh mom! Look, there's a Juno and some friends hanging out on the seed feeder in the tree, Hello there, feathered friends! and some downy headed woodpeckers on the suet feeders,  ...or maybe they are hairy woodpeckers? Mom says that both species are so similar, it's hard to tell! and on the ground some more juncos and LOTS of mourning doves! All in all, mom counted about a dozen mourning doves scattered around on the ground today! Since Mom put up the feeders, we have seen all kinds of local wild birds show up for breakfast and dinner. Mom's been taking so many photos, she's thinking of maybe making a weekly post here about the birds...

Morning!

Image
Good morning friends! Seems no matter what I do there are just some times where my mom gets super neglectful of MY blog and it doesn't get updated.  She tells me things like 'but there's nothing going on.' Or 'I don't have time today, Wes.' But REALLY I know the truth - she's lazy. What's a poodle to do?  Our wonderful mayorz suggested to bring her up on charges...but I just don't know. When she saw the comment she said something about not biting the hands that feed me... Maybe to be safe, I'll do what F&E suggest and give her a good dose of cold shoulder.  And speaking of cold... WHEW has it ever been these days! Mom and I went for a little walk around the lake this morning, and since the ground is cold and we do travel on the roads (which have been dosed with salt) Mom pulled out my doggy shoes. My muttluks are pretty stylin', don't you think? I'm never sure of these things for the ...

The difference a week makes..

Image
Well, the difference a week and the COLD makes. Up until just recently we've been super lucky with our 'winter' weather and it hadn't felt like winter AT ALL. Everyone was joking that maybe we had skipped the season and just jumped right into spring.  Well...winter has finally shown his cold, unpleasant face! Do you remember the swans and all the pretty ducks that we on the lake across from Dad's house just last week? There were these two: And all these guys? And mom's favorite, this guy? Well...a little less then a week later and no waterbirds of any type are swimming around anymore! It's been cold enough in just the past few days that the lake is already covered in a layer of ice. Mom says she doesn't think anyone will be venturing out onto it for skating or anything just yet...but if these 20*F temps keep on, it won't be long until we can walk across the lake and not just around it.

What was on the lake?

Image
Yesterday for Wordless Wednesday I posted a picture from the walk around the lake my mom and I took. It was a very foggy day... There's a lake behind me, I swear there is! I've taken pictures on this rock before and usually there is a nice lake behind me...you could never tell that yesterday! It was also pretty dang muddy out! No, I don't care to get my paw all muddy, thank you. Here's another picture of what was on the lake yesterday. I showed just one in my photo yesterday...but there was actually a mated pair of them! See the white things behind me? Those white things behind me were a pair of swans! Aren't they pretty? Mom loved watching them in the fog, but went back today to get a few better pictures of them. And this time on the lake, there was no fog and much more then just swans! There were these guys all hanging out together. Mallards (both male and female) Canadian geese, and some other type she'...

DUCK!

Image
No really...I mean it.... DUCK! Whew...that was close...Oh wait.. Did you think I meant 'duck' as in the bird? Sorry, my bad! Maybe I should have been more clear and said 'Cover your head quick!' or something? Maybe RUN AWAY!?! You see, in our yard in PA we have some 'attack birds'. Well, more like very protective parent birds. A few years ago Mom put up a bird house, not really expecting anything to take to it. Ever since then, every year without fail a pair of these guys has made it their, and their babies, home for a few months of the year. Mom thinks they are purple martins, but isn't 100% sure. Whatever they are, they sure are pretty little birds...and VERY protective if you get to close to their..oh boy - DUCK! ...uh, sorry...what was I saying? Oh yeah....They are very protective and if you get to close to their house they will start dive-bombing to try and chase you away. It's a bit unnerving having a bird screaming ...

Even more hiking...

Image
So momma and I headed back to the Paulinskill Wildlife Management area again today so Momma could take lots and lots and LOTS of pictures again with her other, better camera lens. Whoever..she hardly took ANY of me, and none which will be in this post...how RUDE is that?! (Wes' Momma: The day was just so stupid pretty...I love Wes but..how many days are there like THIS?! I'll post the pics of todays hike, Wesley only, tomorrow. Till then, enjoy these. :) )
